Air Pollution Impacts the Natural Environment

Yosemite Valley on a clear day with Half Dome in the distance

Concern about the effects of air pollution on the environment is nothing new. Air pollution causes significant damage to ecological resources.

It damages plants; acidifies lakes, streams, and soil; and leads to concentrations of poisons in the food chain. Acid rain, usually caused by sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide combining with moisture in the air, is extremely harmful to plants, rivers, and lakes and the creatures that live in them. Such pollution also directly affects crops.
